|
|
The door had obviously not been used in a long time, and scraped open slowly and noisily. “I didn’t even know the station HAD a seventh level,” Floyd observed as the lights slowly flickered on.
“Well, I just checked, and it was on the station plans,” Mr. Maintenance Engineer replied as he stepped out of the elevator and started checking some nearby panels. “And the elevator did have a button for it.”
“That’s true.” Floyd slowly rolled forward and looked around. “Did it always?”
Mr. Maintenance Engineer glanced back towards the elevator. “It doesn’t appear to be new, so I’d guess it’s been there for a while.” He tapped a button on one of the panels, and a distant fan came to life, blowing shuttle-fuel-scented air down the hallway. “In our current reality, at least. Want to look around and see what’s here?
Floyd turned and looked down the dimly-lit, dusty hallway. “No, not really.”
“Okay.” Mr. Maintenance Engineer turned back to the panel and turned the fan off, then followed Floyd into the elevator. “The eighth level will probably be more interesting, anyway.”
“We have one of those?”
“Well, it’s on the station plans, and the elevator does have a button for it…”
Floyd looked at the button. “So we should probably get the reality normalizer checked again.”
“Right.” _________________

Great mini-story. The "No, not really" is just so Floyd. I can picture him looking out on Level Seven with an air of annoyed apathy. |

So you're saying that only 6 levels of the 'old' Station V3 were actually used? _________________ Whatever happened to simplicity? |

The old station didn't even have six levels. So finding a seventh one was a bit of a surprise. _________________

The original station had four main levels - one of which was mostly the fuel tank. _________________
