I need a couple of suggestions for good SF-theme movies that would be suitable for under-13s. This is for a special event at my kids' elementary school, so the age range will be 6-12 years. Can you guys (and of course I use that term in a non-gender-specific way ) help me out? _________________

Most of the classic science fiction is probably pretty family friendly, but I assume that's not what you're looking for.
Explorers leaps to mind as something specifically aimed at kids that's a little off the beaten path. ET certainly seems to have a kid demagraphic. And Disney had Treasure Planet and Lilo and Stitch in the Scifi realm. _________________ Check out Zortic, ETI-PI, Abby's Agency, Podwarp 1999, and the WCCAs |

Unlike fantasy, it's hard to find decent family-friendly SF movies. You have Star Wars ep. IV of course, but I'm guessing the kids have already seen this enough. A few other ideas:
Titan A.E.
The Last Starfighter
Nausicaa
Batteries Not Included
Silent Running
Tron
Explorers
Zathura
Rocketeer
Iron Giant _________________ Jim Francis

This might be stretching the definition of "good" a little bit, but how about The Black Hole? _________________

Yeah, that's a good choice too; I liked it as a kid. It's a slight bit on the scary side and with some violence, but not too bad. _________________ Jim Francis

Black Hole was nightmare fuel for me
But, anyway, Titan AE could be pushing it (I rewatched it a bit ago, kind of crazy. But if you're in the upper limit of 6-13 it's likely completely fine.) I could vouch for silent running, I loved that movie when I was a wee one. Nausicaa would also be an interesting choice, I thought that had good, clear depth without being mature-oriented.
Anyway, good luck indoctrinating the oncoming horde of scifi zom- I mean... good luck introducing the wonders of science fiction to the bright eyed youths! _________________ |

I can't believe Short Circuit wasn't mentioned unless the quality is worst than I remember it being.
EDIT:
Oddly enough I remember the sequel not the original. I don't think I've ever seen the original. |

Perhaps the Hitchhiker's Guide movie?
(I say that at the risk of losing any sci fi cred I may have, but I did truly enjoy the movie, as long as it's taken as a separate entity from the books [and all other iterations]) |

Make it a cross between Harry Potter and Spy kids and you're laughing |
