This is an explanation of sorts to a question I posted in "Stupid Answer, Stupid Question".

The question was Why, in the early 21st century, did a company call "Disney" delay giving a response back about a license renewal agreement to a company called "Slave Labor Graphics"?

The reasoning for that question is a rather interesting story:

A few years ago, a comic-book publishing company called "Slave Labor Graphics" or slg, reached a licensing agreement to publish a few comics based off properties of another company called Disney. The interesting thing about this licensing agreement that slg was originally going to do comics involving 3 properties: Haunted Mansion, Wonderland, and Tron. The creator of 'gargoyles' wanted to do a comic to continue where the original series left off so Disney made the arrangements to let slg also do a Gargoyles comic. Mind you be, 'Gargoyles' was not on slg's list of properties to do a comic based off. As it turns 'Gargoyles' became one of their best sellers, and eventually slg produced more Gargoyles comics than the other Disney properties that they had licenses to do comics for. The current license with slg gives them the right to finish 12 issues of the main comic and 6 issues of a spin-off comic. Currently 8 issues of the main comic and 3 issues of the spin-off comic have been released. Hopefully the remaining issues will be released by the end of this year. Earlier this year, Disney announced it was forming its own comic book publishing company, Kingdom comics. Before the announcement about Kingdom comics was made, slg sent a notice to Disney that slg wished to renew the contract so they could produce more gargoyles comics. The status of that new licensing agreement is in Disney's hands right now.

There are positives and negatives for gargoyles fans to view about the current situation and its possible outcomes:

1)Disney agrees to renew the contract at current price. Gargoyles fans will be happy because the current status quo will remain.

2)Disney wants to raise the price of the contract to do Gargoyles comics. Effectively, slg can't afford the price increase because the profit margins as they are aren't exactly outstanding so slg will stop releasing gargoyles comics.

3)Disney declines to renew the license deal and decides to let Kingdom comics produce new gargoyles comics. This situation is potentially akin to "lose the battle, win the war". Potential problems are if the current writer doesn't get to keep writing and a new learning curve for artists. Another potential problem is profit margins: if gargoyles comics don't make a sufficient profit margin, Kingdom comics will drop it. Under slg, the required profit margin wouldn't be potentially as high as Kingdom comics requirements might be. The upside might be potential advertising.

4)Disney declines to renew the license deal and Kingdom comics declines to produce more gargoyles comics. Basically, the fans are screwed. At least we had a good run - 12 issues of the main comic and 6 issues of a spin-off. Yes, this is the worst case scenario.

Of course, gargoyles fans are also frustrated because although Disney released Season 1 and first half Season 2 on dvd, Disney hasn't released the second half of Season 2 on dvd. Some people have thrown around the lame excuse that they'll buy season 2 volume 1 after season 2 volume 2 comes out without realizing that unless sales of season 2 volume 1 significantly pickup, there won't be a release of season 2 volume 2.

I'm thinking about posting reviews of the comics in this forum, but I don't want to upset the forum owner.

That's too bad. Sad

Any chance Kingdom comics will pick it up instead?

We don't know. Greg Weisman hasn't been approached by Kingdom Comics. We have got a promise of Gargoyles:Clan Building Volume 2 tradepaperback will come out containing issues 7-12, even if the last few issues aren't released individually. Plus there's a guarantee that Gargoyles:Bad Guys will get a trade paperback containing its 6 issues.
